No EHIC card
No EHIC card

Thought I would give heads up on a recent experience.
We had family staying with us for two weeks. Whilst here one of the children needed to see a doctor. No problem I thought take EHIC card to Quesada medical centre.
No EHIC cards! Go to centre but would not see her as no card but would need to pay 100€. They don't accept cards there! Had to go the a bank and make a payment and return. Not any bank as we found out after going to a very helpful Bankinter. Had to be a specific one in Quesada. Caldix I think.
By the time we worked all this out I realised health centre would be shut so decided to look for alternatives as behind all this we had a poorly child who needed attention.
Went to private doctor by the Archs. They saw us immediately and charged 40€. That covered consultation, writing of prescription and doctors certificate.
Morale is make sure everyone as EHIC card it's will get quicker attention. If not then local private doctor is more flexible and cheaper. Dread to think what would have happened if we needed A&E.
It turned into a much bigger saga and the added learning is that lloyds bank travel insurance were also helpful in getting child and mother home without flying. They confirmed if hospital had been needed then family were covered.
Just a learning experience.

Worth taking a look at http://www.nhs.uk/nhsengland/healthcareabroad/ehic/pages/about-the-ehic.aspx which explains what to do if you haven't got your EHIC card with you.
We had friends staying with us one time, there was a health issue but their cards had expired. But they were able to renew over the phone and all was accepted at Rojales medical centre (think they sent a fax to the medical centre to confirm).

If your family had Travel Insurance it would have been better to get in touch with them. They would give you details of a Doctor or Clinic to take the child to or even the Hospital.

Unusual. The Lo Marabu centre in Quesada is usually very helpful. Couple across the road were stuck by the Iceland volcano eruption (remember that?) and went to the centre with no EHIC. The receptionist rang the medical centre at Newcastle (had it on speed dial) who faxed through the entitlement with reference numbers there and then.
That was a while ago, though.

I have in the past needed some treatment and found local medical centres not willing to help or be nice even. I have always had EHIC and passport with me too. I think it is down to the fact that they do not receive payments for treating us. I ended up attending accident and emergency at vaja baga hospital. I must say the treatment I had there was excellent and I will always use this as my first port of call in future.

They do receive payments for treating "us". It's what the EHIC is all about.
In fact, even as a non-resident Rojales will issue you a temporary SIP card so you can see the doctor without having to show your EHIC all the time.

Tried Rojales as Quesada one said they accepted cards. They wouldn't treat her but sent us back to Quesada.
Travel insurance were very helpful.
Quite pleased private doctor earnt 40€ rather than Quesada medical earning 100€
Who knows what brexit will bring but in mean time bring EHIC card and have travel insurance.

The seguridad social is for people who are spanish resident. If not you can go to the private doctors, they ask 40-50€ The medical centre advised me to go private because they are a lot cheaper.
With the EHIC card you could go to the privat docor and clinic

Seguridad social is social security. Sistema Nacional de Salud is the National Health Service.
Private doctors and hospitals in Spain do not accept the EHIC.

And the moral of the story is -
Get EHIC, after all, they're free.
Get travel insurance, it's fairly cheap for Europe but they can insist you use your EHIC first. You've paid hundreds of quids to get here, the travel insurance will be cheaper than putting a suitcase on Ryanair.
Try the pharmacy first. They really, really are excellent and can give loads of advice. My son in law just visited and had a problem but had forgotten his BM machine for diabetes. The pharmacy at Dona Pepa gave him a free one with 10 test strips. He was quite amazed when there was no charge. One of the grandkids got a "swimmer's ear" and they gave him a type of cream which worked wonders for about €4 and gave him a check over in case it was a viral infection. No jaw pain, no throat pain, no dental pain. No viral infection. All for no charge.
The system here is brilliant. Imagine if any of this had happened on a visit to the USA?
